first things first

The first of May.

The first day of my month of early starts (one of my things to do before thirty). So at 6am this morning I found myself pulling on my trainers and going out for a run with Millie, followed by cleaning the kitchen, making breakfast, getting ready, doing a clothes wash and starting work by 8.30am. I know for a lot of people this is probably standard morning routine, but it's a good beginning to what I hope is the path to being a long-term early riser! I also thought that if I could make it happen over a bank holiday weekend, that had to be good motivation to continue - I'm sure I'll be much less likely to break the habit down the line if I know that I sacrificed three days of bank holiday lie ins! The early start also led to me doing a run this morning, and my first pace of under 8 minutes per kilometre, which is progress since last month's post, and inspired today's word of the week.

The first few steps towards completing some of that list. We tried to draw up a list of top 5 films but ended up with more than 50 - The Husband has always despaired at how few classic films I have seen (by his definition that includes Back to The Future and The Karate Kid) but I guess this was proof. We also have Bank Holiday plans to get our vegetable patch built which I'm getting very excited about indeed. Perhaps even the first barbecue of the year when the garden is all spruced up, although the weather may not comply.

The first dinner at a new restaurant with my mum tonight. We had a really lovely meal and it was great to catch up and spend a few hours enjoying each other's company. It was a wonderful start to the long weekend.

Now the first early night of the month, ready for my second early start tomorrow.

  1. I do get a lot more done when I get up early, but I can't pretend that I enjoy it...

I need to see the list of films btw. what are the best films, and what films get onto the classics lists are big topics of conversation here. the teenage boy is a huge film watcher.

    1. it's a bit like the running, once I've got on with it I always feel better and happier, but I never stop needing convincing!

I may well write up the film list, although it is a little odd, partly because it only includes films I haven't seen, and secondly because I am not convinced The Husband was entirely unbiased when he read out suggestions off the internet. There seem to be less black and white films than I anticipated, and far more of the films he thinks I should have seen!

  2. I much prefer an early rise to a late night! I love getting up early and feeling I have completed some tasks before everyone else is up. X

    1. I think I just much prefer sleep! But I do love the peace and stillness of the house, and that sense of getting a head start on things! x

  3. I wish I could stick to getting up by 6am. The early mornings are so peaceful and I always end up getting more done. I'm okay for a couple of days, then I get engrossed in doing something or other late at night and oversleep the next day.
